Mahima Gujral’s Trousseau Tales Part 3: The Cocktail Lehenga

After an intimate kirtan ceremony held at home, the next event scheduled for Mahima Gujral’s wedding festivities was the cocktail party. It was time to have some fun as the brand head of Sue Mue got set to tie the knot with Aman Wadhwa, the Singapore-based founder of music startup OverHear.

Inspired by the speakeasies of 1920s America, Mahima wanted a “part-rugged, part-elegant feel” to her cocktail, reminiscent of a slice of history but rooted in modern lifestyle. The couple had cabanas set up at the venue, which was a sprawling farmhouse in Chhattarpur in south Delhi. Each cabana had elements and details reflecting the couple’s own passions: travel, music and fashion.

The event also featured a sheesha lounge, an indoor area with seating, a photo booth and a walkway decorated with balloons and quirky photos of the couple.

With a guest list of about a thousand people, the cocktail night was expected to be the largest event the couple would host during their week-long wedding festivities. Mahima’s mother, Mohita Gujral, creative director of Sue Mue, wanted to ensure that her daughter stood out like a star among the guests. And so she designed Mahima’s outfit herself.

Dressed in the silver-grey lehenga conceptualized by her mother, Mahima was certainly the belle of the ball. “I kept my hair tied up and wore minimal jewellery as I knew I would end up dancing quite a bit, and would need to be comfortable,” she smiles. The details on her off-shoulder crop top were evocative of 1920s tassels to go with the party theme, and the silver shimmer gave an old-world Gatsby charm to the modern Indo-Western silhouette.

Featuring dabka work and bugle beads on organza, the lehenga was lightweight and did not need a dupatta, and so Mahima was free to walk about unencumbered. “Aman and I took three rounds of the entire venue, mingling with as many guests as we could,” she reminisces.

With Mahima, her mother and her mother-in-law all dressed in Sue Mue, the party was definitely a glamorous night to remember. After the social networking and a delicious dinner, it was time to hit the dance floor – and they did, till 5 am!
