Mahima Gujral’s Trousseau Tales Part 1: The Engagement Lehenga
Almost two months after Mahima Gujral said ‘yes’ to a proposal of marriage by Aman Wadhwa, the Singapore-based founder of music startup OverHear, her family hosted a celebratory sundowner for relatives and friends in Delhi. It was the height of winter, and Mahima – who had always had a fondness for lehengas – wanted to wear something subtle for her engagement party that would also keep her warm.
“For my trousseau, I didn’t have to think twice. It had to be my all-time favourite, Sue Mue,” says Mahima. Nestled in the heart of Delhi, the bespoke womenswear label was founded by Mahima’s grandmother Narinder Mohan almost 50 years ago. The designers at Sue Mue understood her need for a hassle-free ensemble. “I am clumsy with dupattas and asked them to figure out a fix,” she recalls.
After the 40-day process of conceptualisation, sketching, sampling and trials, Mahima found herself with a raw-silk lehenga that was absolutely perfect for her. With beautiful zardozi florals embroidered on a pastel silk lehenga set – a shade chosen by Mahima’s mother, Mohita Gujral – the ensemble included a dupatta that was attached to the blouse like a cape.
“It was every bit traditional yet every bit young and chic. I completed my engagement look with fine emerald earrings from Rose Jewellers and a no-makeup look that was blended to perfection by makeup artist Anand Kaira and Santwana,” says Mahima, who studied fashion management in Singapore and Italy, and now looks after marketing at Sue Mue.
And the best part? Mahima’s 27-year-old man of the day, Aman Wadhwa, who also works as a brand strategist for South-East Asian short-film platform Viddsee and is an accomplished musician, was rather pleased to see her in her ensemble. “He loved it,” she laughs.
Dressed in a dapper grey suit and armed with an electric guitar, Aman also belted out a few numbers for his lady love, who cheered him on during his performance. A glamorous evening outdoors surrounded by softly glowing candles and flowers, Mahima and Aman’s engagement was a night to remember.
